I love that even though this week’s Mom-spiration had a setback last year, she dusted herself off and has refocused on her health and fitness. Shayna has a goal to run a 10k this year and she has started training–taking it one step at a time. She manages to take the time to take care of her health all while being a mom of 3, working part time and owning her own business–a true inspiration to all of us who sometimes struggle to make the time to work out. Shayna shows it can be done!
My Fit Family: Tell us a little about yourself!
Shayna: I’m Shayna Keene from New Mexico and I blog at Enchanted Desert Minnie . I’m 34 years old and have a wonderful husband as well as 3 boys, 11 year old twins and an 8 year old. My family loves Disney and we have been to both parks! I also love cooking and although I try to keep it healthy, I like to bake treats too. Especially my grandmother’s Banana Pudding! I also like to crochet and knit, although I’m still a novice…I can make a lot of scarves! I work in the healthcare setting in an inpatient unit part time. I like being able to be there to help my patients but I must say my favorite way to spend the day is with my kids, either at home or at their school volunteering. My husband and I also own a Travel Agency, specializing in Disney Destinations. I hope to build it up to where I can work at home full time.
MFF: Have you always embraced a fit and healthy lifestyle?
Shayna: No, I haven’t. In high school I was in Drill Team and we danced 5 days a week, as well as games and competitions. But after that I was sporadic with working out. When I was pregnant with my twins I was put on modified bed rest and actually had trouble gaining weight!
After the birth of my 3rd child I started to eat healthier, but didn’t exercise. I really never had trouble staying thin before when I was younger, but when I turned 30 I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Disease. With my thyroid being out of wack I was tired all the time and did gain weight. I did try a high protein no carb diet, but it was unrealistic and hard to maintain.
Now I have started to run, after a hiatus after a car accident. I’m certainly not a pro at it, but I try my best to get out there and do it! I also decided to eat in moderation. I can’t deprive myself of sweets, I’m a chocoholic! But I make a lot of healthy meals for my family, and have incorporated lots of fresh veggies. Luckily my boys love salad and will eat anything I make.
MFF: What does typical workout look like for you?
Shayna: I use the Jeff Galloway Method for running. I love it because it’s easy to understand and the schedule Jeff made has very attainable goals. I also will do workouts at home. Lately I’ve been doing Zumba on the Xbox and Kinect. Since I was a dancer, it makes it feel like I’m not even working out, it’s fun! I think that’s the key sometimes when being active. If you enjoy doing it, you’ll continue.
MFF: What is your favorite physical activity?
Shayna: Even though I’m still a newbie I like getting out there on the pavement and run. I like being able to be out there and clear my head. I have found it’s not only good for my body to be out there but for my mind too. If something is bothering me, I’m able to get out there and gain some new perspective.
MFF: How do you make the time to workout being a mom?
Shayna: When I run most of the time the boys want to come with me, either running or riding their bike. Where we live has a great path that many people in our neighborhood use to do the same. Usually one kid comes with me and I also use that time to have one on one time with them. As well as getting them out and active! When I do run by myself it’s either when they’re at school or in the evening when my husband’s home. I love being able to have my own time by myself with my own music just doing something for myself. If I’m doing Zumba I do that when they’re at school. Because quite frankly I don’t have all the moves down yet and rather look silly alone!
MFF: What is your favorite healthy meal or snack
Shayna: I think my favorite go to healthy snack is hummus with veggies. It’s something I can just grab when I’m busy with either work or the kids. My favorite indulgence is sweets! I have a major sweet tooth! My favorite treat to make is my grandmother’s Banana Pudding!
MFF: Who inspires you?
Shayna: I think my dad is one person who inspires me the most. He has always led an active lifestyle and eats very healthy. He bikes a lot and just likes being outdoors hiking and being in nature. He has been battling cancer for a few years now and he doesn’t let it stop him. He does what he can with healthy eating and research so he can be his best advocate. My grandfather also inspires me.
He is in his 80’s and still plays softball and teaches computer classes at a Senior Center. I think that’s the key to a ong life and sharp mind. Staying active and involved.
MFF: What one piece of advice would you give out to someone just starting out on their health/fitness journey?
Shayna: I would say if you want to make a change, start with something small. Don’t overwhelm yourself so much that you quit. And if you do quit, that’s ok. Just get back up and try again. We are all human and make mistakes. Also, it helps to have a friend or group that you can connect with for encouragement and motivation. It also is helpful to keep you accountable with your goals. If there are others around you that know what you are trying to accomplish they can be your best ally!
Thank you, Shayna, for sharing your story! Best of luck to you on your training!
Never Give Up,
